WKU bands holding annual concertThe Western Kentucky University Department of Bands will present its annual Prism Concert 8 p.m. Friday at Van Meter Auditorium. The concert format features a rapid-fire sequence of ensembles and musical selections that will be staged in different locations in the performance hall. This years concert will feature Evolution, a selection that covers the history of music with narration, and Cityscapes I, a composition that portrays the return to an active and vital lifestyle in New York City. Ensembles to be featured include the WKU Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Basketball Band, Clarinet Choir and other groups, including a bluegrass band. Admission is $10; $5 for students and senior citizens. Proceeds benefit the WKU music program. Tickets will be sold at the door, but to guarantee seating, tickets may be purchased at several outlets, including Royal Music and the WKU Music Office. For more information, contact John C. Carmichael, director of bands, at 745-5893 or the Music Department at 745-3751.WKU Herald earns award nominationsThe College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky Universitys student newspaper, was named a collegiate crown finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The award, either a Gold Crown or Silver Crown, will be presented March 22 at the College Media Convention in New York City. Ryan Clark, a December graduate from Louisville, was editor in the fall of 2001 and Louisville senior Brian Moore was editor last spring. Of the 1,749 CSPA members eligible, 1,550 magazines, newspapers and yearbooks entered the competition. Other newspaper crown finalists are from Ball State University, Santa Ana College, the School of Art Institute of Chicago, Indiana University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Alabama, Northwestern University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, Murray State University and Arizona State University. The Herald won a Gold Crown in 2000 and two in 2001.Western honorshigh school seniorsWestern Kentucky University on Jan. 16 honored 31 high school seniors from five area counties for their high academic achievements. Students from Allen County-Scottsville, Butler County, Edmonson County, Franklin-Simpson, Logan County and Russellville high schools were honored during the annual High School Scholars Luncheon. Each of the students qualify for at least a renewable full-tuition scholarship to WKU, and others could have books and other expenses paid. The group included 19 Governors Scholars and had an average grade-point average of 3.91 and an average ACT score of 28.06. The average in Kentucky is less than 21. Students honored included: From Allen County-Scottsville High School: Brittany Carter, Randi Dossey, Eric Fisher, Patrick Grizzard, Nathan Landrum and Heather Spencer. From Butler County High School: Henry Cardwell, Ashley Dockery, Elizabeth Minton, Brittany Phelps and Michael Staub. From Edmonson County High School: Rachel Cook, Jennifer Jordan, Katrina Long, Jonathan Stice and Amber Wolfe. From Franklin-Simpson High School: Stephanie Allison, Sherese Bailey, Noah Kapley, Andrew Mellott, Marielle Moffitt, Drew Rash, Todd Towe and Tristan Zoerb. From Logan County High School: Seth Barnett, Lana Costellow, Adam Graham and Benjamin Rogers. From Russellville High School: Carly Baker, Jennie Fyhr and Kristin Sindorf. Williams makesBelmont Deans ListJeffrey Williams, son of Don and Kim Williams of Bowling Green, qualified for the Fall 2002 Deans List at Belmont University in Nashville. Williams is a senior with a history and French major. He is a 1999 graduate of Bowling Green High School. Evans makes Deans List at BirminghamSusan Evans of Bowling Green was among the more than 300 students named to the Deans List of Distinguished Students for the Fall 2002 term at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala. Full-time students named to the Deans List have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Upward Boundtaking applicationsThe Veterans Upward Bound program at Western Kentucky University is accepting new students for spring 2003.This program provides free high-school level academic refresher classes to eligible veterans, as well as providing free assistance with college or vocational/technical school admission application, financial aid application assistance and career exploration.
