BG man gets 32 years for armed robberies

U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell sentenced a Bowling Green man Tuesday to 32 years in prison for his commission of four armed robberies in 2001.The U.S. Attorneys office said that 24-year-old Robert Deacon Spiers Jr. robbed Farmers National Bank in Scottsville on Nov. 8, 2001, taking $11,400; the former Holiday Inn in Bowling Green of $400 on Nov. 2, 2001; Vectra Bank in Grand Junction, Colo., of $2,396 on May 31, 2001, and World Savings Bank in Madera, Calif., of $3,637 on Sept. 18, 2001.Spiers was ordered to pay restitution to his victims.Also in District Court in Bowling Green, a federal grand jury on Wednesday issued the following indictments:Jimmy Lee Tucker, 58, of Glasgow was indicted for unlawful possession of a firearm. Tucker, a four-time convicted felon, was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic weapon on April 24. If convicted, Tucker will serve a minimum of 15 years in prison. He is scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 19 in Bowling Green.The grand jury also indicted Jason Darwin Powers, 32, of Bowling Green with the intent to distribute methamphetamine and marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession of counterfeit U.S. currency.If convicted, Powers could face 75 years in prison and a $3.25 million fine. He also is scheduled for arraignment Nov. 19.
