Lake Malone beach ready to open after bacteria scare

The beach at Lake Malone State Park will reopen today after being closed since late July because of high fecal coliform bacteria levels. Two consecutive weekly tests have shown levels are no longer a problem. Fecal coliform, if ingested, may cause intestinal problems. The state Division of Water tested other areas of the lake and found no problems, according to Maleva Chamberlain, a spokeswoman for the department. The source of the original contamination is still not known. The beach will be open today through Friday. At first it looked like labor shortages would mean the beach would reopen only on weekends this month. That issue was mostly taken care of, according to Jim Carroll, a spokesman for the state Department of Parks. The labor issue, however, does mean the beach wont be open on Saturday or Sunday this week. The lifeguards for the most part are college students and they needed are Saturday to be able to move to school and they will come back on the weekends to finish out the season, Carroll said. The beach also will be open Aug. 21-25 and then Aug. 31-Sept. 2.
