June 18, 2002, births at The Medical Center include a girl to Heather and Brandon Ford of Scottsville. July 19 births at The Medical Center include a girl to Nancy and Mike Meador of Smiths Grove. June 18 births at Greenview Regional Hospital include a girl to Shafaye Wingler of Bowling Green and Jason Monday of Glasgow. The Warren East Optimist Club recently held the regional Optimist Oratorical. Several Bowling Green Junior High School sixth-graders competed. They were Will Meredith, Harrison Kilgore, Jessica Lewis, Katie Wilson, Katie Goodwin and Nicola Humphries. Meredith placed first in the boys division and Lewis placed first in the girls division. They will compete in Louisville for the state finals and a $1,500 scholarship. Goodwin placed second in the girls division, while Humphries placed third. Kilgore placed second for the boys division. All winners received medallions. Katherine Hall, daughter of Allan and Janet Hall of Bowling Green, has been named to the Deans List for the spring 2002 term at Georgia Institute of Technology. Hall is a rising sophomore at Georgia Tech majoring in aerospace engineering. She is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School. Jarred Reber and Hieu Nguyen are Woodcraft Industries Inc. 2002 Bowling Green High School scholarship recipients. Two southcentral Kentucky residents were among the 227 students who received degrees at commencement ceremonies at Berea College on May 26.Jonathan Eugene Greer, the son of Tracy Cofer of Bowling Green, received a bachelor of arts degree in education studies. Katherine Elizabeth Racz, the daughter of Stephen Racz of Bowling Green, received a bachelor of arts degree in religion. Aimee Janelle Ault, a 2002 graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., is listed in the Whos Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Ault, a business administration major, is from Bowling Green. Whos Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges recognizes students who have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders. Logan Brumit and Kaitlyn Potzick were winners of the Drakes Creek Middle School annual essay contest on Why I Choose to Be Alcohol & Drug Free, sponsored by Neace Lukens and Southern Kentucky Association of Insurance Professionals. Brumit, first place winner, received a $100 savings bond, and Potzick, second place winner, received a $50 savings bond. Both were students in Nina Jones Family Living class. Hallie Grace Cowles of Bowling Green, the daughter of Brad and Clarissa Cowles, recently placed first runner-up in the Miss Itsy Bitsy Summer Sunshine Pageant in Leitchfield. She also won the optional category for Prettiest Eyes. Air Force Airman Michael T. Mestas, the son of Debbie Summerville of Rockfield, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is a 2002 graduate of Warren Central High School.uBowling Green resident Andrea Meredith was named a United States National Award winner in journalism. The Greenwood High School student was nominated by teacher Rachael S. Abrams. Meredith is the daughter of Marsha and Lance Meredith of Bowling Green. Grandparents are George and Anna Muriel Kennedy of Hopkinsville and Jack and Mildred Meredith of Bee Spring. Bowling Green resident Bobby Reynolds was named a United States National Award winner in character and citizenship. The Greenwood High School student was nominated by teacher Todd Tolbert. Reynolds is the son of Mike and Jan Reynolds of Bowling Green. Grandparents are Sue Guy of Bowling Green and Elma Reynolds of Clarksville, Tenn. Lt. j.g. Patrick K. Shields, the son of Jerry and Pat Shields of Bowling Green, has received several awards. On Dec. 1, as an ensign for the United States Naval Reserve, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. On March 5, the Department of the Army Certificate of Achievement was awarded to Ensign Shields and on March 16, he was promoted to Lt. Junior Grade in the Naval Reserve. The Director of Naval Criminal Investigative Service presented him with a letter of commendation for superior performance of duties while serving as a special projects officer in the Security and Logistics Department assigned to Headquarters, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Washington, D.C., from March to May. Lt. j.g. Shields was also awarded the National Defense Medal for Active Duty Service from March 18 to May 9.On May 13, he reported to the Civil Engineering Corps, Officer Basic School (Reserves), at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, Calif. He completed the course on May 30.Lt. j.g. Shields is assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 (Seabees) in Huntsville, Ala. His current duty is officer-in-charge of NMCB-24, Detachment 0424, at Naval Reserve Center in Nashville. He is a graduate of Warren Central High School and University of Kentucky. Heather Hill, a freshman at Georgetown College and the daughter of Steve and Janet Hill of Bowling Green, was named to the A Honor Roll for the spring semester. She is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School. To be named to the A Honor Roll, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.75-4.0 and have earned a minimum of 12 semester hours. Jeremy McWhorter, the son of Rex and June McWhorter, has been named to the Deans List at University of Kentucky in Lexington. McWhorter, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, is a 2001 graduate of Greenwood High School. Meredith Hughes, the daughter of Edna and Mike Hughes of Auburn, was awarded honors in Extemporaneous Public Speaking at the 2002 Kentucky Association FFA Convention in Louisville June 5-7.She will attend University of Kentucky in the fall on a scholarship. Ali Smith, a 2002 graduate of Warren Central High School and co-valedictorian, has been awarded the Singletary Scholarship from the University of Kentucky, along with the University of Kentucky Valedictorian, Governors Scholar, Outstanding Science student and Air Force Outstanding Science Student scholarships. Ali will attend UK this fall, where she will work toward a degree in biology. Her future plans are to attend medical school and pursue a career in surgery. She is the daughter of Steve Smith and Lisa Houchin and stepdaughter of Donald Houchin. Trey W. Meredith, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth A. Meredith of Bowling Green, graduated from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
