NBCs newest reality game show, Dog Eat Dog, had a Big Red flavor Monday night as recent Western Kentucky University graduate Marisa Kirby competed against five other contestants for $25,000.Kirby, a Westmoreland, Tenn., native who now lives in Los Angeles, didnt win, but she made a big impression on friends and family. The day the show aired, she said she got five phone calls at one time on her cell phone while she was shopping. They were very excited, Kirby said. It took a lot of guts is what they said. Dog Eat Dog pits six contestants against each other with both physical and mental challenges. After elimination rounds, the remaining contestant must compete again, this time against all the eliminated players. If the contestant wins, the $25,000 is his or hers to keep; if the contestant loses, the money is split between the other competitors. Kirby wanted the $25,000 all to herself. So when she was picked to play Strip Quarterback a game in which the contestant tries to throw a foam football through a hole, losing a piece of clothing with each miss she dove right in. My fear of losing was a lot more than my fear of being naked, Kirby said. I personally didnt see anything wrong with it. Seeing Kirby naked (albeit blurred) on national television didnt surprise her friend, Amy Blevins of Bowling Green. Blevins and Kirby met in 1996 when they came to Western as freshmen and were neighbors in Bates-Runner Hall. I wouldnt say she was shy, Blevins said. Were proud of her. Shes a very sweet girl. Blevins was impressed with the way Kirby handled herself on the show. She was poised, even naked, she said. Kirby landed her spot on the show by accident. She was having dinner with a friend on Valentines Day when she struck up a conversation with the casting director. After an interview and a video audition, she was in. Kirby graduated from Western in December with a degree in graphic design. She had done some print and commercial work in Nashville and decided to move to Los Angeles while she was young enough to enjoy it. I just figured it would be fun, she said. And while Kirby left Dog Eat Dog the loser, she said she was happy with her performance. I should have won, she said.
