Lindsey Wilsons dominance in the NAIA Mens Soccer National Championships had to end sometime; it turned out to be Monday, and in the cruelest of fashions. No. 6 seed Park University ended the Blue Raiders run of four straight titles in sudden-death penalty kicks. Nairobi, Kenya, native Eric Onago drilled the clinching penalty kick for a 2-2 (4-3 PKs) streak-ending win in the semifinals at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex. It just wasnt meant to be, Lindsey Wilson coach Ray Wells said. Our streak is over now, and now well have to start again. Thats just the way it goes. It seemed as if No. 2 Lindsey Wilsons streak of 18 straight national tournament victories would be extended by a game Monday. The Blue Raiders (21-2-1) held a 2-0 second-half lead and hadnt given up a goal in the tournament. But Park made its comeback in the 68th minute. Chris Lisaka found the back of the net off a rebounded shot attempt. Then, with less than six minutes left in the game, Mekete Gashaw stunned the Blue Raiders on a game-tying goal off a crossing assist from Henok Belayneh and Lisaka. Who would have thought? Park University coach Efram Shimlis said. It takes (a lot) to come back against them. It took everything. We just needed a goal to get us back. In the pair of 10-minute overtimes, Lindsey Wilson had to survive several terrific opportunities by the Pirates. Park had four shots on goal in the first overtime session and one more chance in the second frame. Lindsey Wilson also had a chance to advance into tonights championship, but the Park defense stopped Brian Ombiji in front of the net. The game just turned on that first goal and momentum came to them, Wells said. We had a chance or two, but just couldnt finish it. If I knew the answer (to why we lost a 2-0 lead) Id be worth $1 million. The Blue Raiders actually broke Park first as Stephan David and Gavin Oldham netted penalty kicks, while Park split on its first two chances. But Lindsey Wilson misfired on its next two penalty kicks and Park took the advantage on scores from Belayneh and Magnus Gunnarsson. Boyzz Khumalo, who had a goal and an assist in regulation, kept the Blue Raiders alive with his penalty kick, but Onago ended Lindsey Wilsons run by smashing his opportunity into the upper portion of the net. We dont usually practice penalty kicks, but (Sunday) for some reason we did, Shimlis said. I cant explain it. Park (21-1-2) has now defeated the tournaments No. 2 and No. 3 seeds for a chance at tonights championship. It will take on the University of Mobile (Ala.) at 7 p.m.University of Mobile (Ala.) 1Auburn-Montgomery 0The No. 5 seed University of Mobile upset top-seeded Auburn University-Montgomery 1-0 in the first semifinal match Monday at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex. Auburn-Montgomery had won against Mobile in two previous tries this season. But Teba McKnights goal on a Stephen Shirley assist in the 65th minute was enough to push the Rams into tonights championship.
