SALINAS, Calif. William M. Bill Oates, 86, of Woodland, formerly of Bowling Green, Ky., died Oct. 21, 2002, at his home.The Vine Grove, Ky., native was a 1938 graduate of Western Kentucky State College, an employee at WLBJ in Bowling Green, an Army Air Corps veteran stationed in Fresno, co-founder of KSBW Radio and KSBW Television, builder and operator of Ken Kimes Motels in Palm Springs, Modesto, Indio and Blythe, began businesses in Carmel including KLRB Radio, The Fabulous Toots Lagoon and Club Jalapeno, Pacific Radio Group in Maui, Hawaii, Carmel Vintage Shoppe and the Carmel Wine Cellar Restaurant, was president of Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital board, a charter member of Corral de Tierra Country Club, an honorary Kentucky Colonel, senior warden of the Vestry of St. Pauls Episcopal Church; president of the Salinas Rotary Club, a lifetime member of the PTA, and a member of Salinas Chamber of Commerce, Salinas Jaycees, Christensen Duck Club, Bardin Duck Club, Ducks Unlimited and Golden Retriever Club of Northern California. He was the husband of the late Mildred Holden Oates.Memorial services were held in Salinas. The body was cremated. Arrangements were under the direction of Struve and Laporte Mortuary.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 1071 Pajaro St., Salinas, CA 93901.Survivors include a daughter, Judy Oates of Salinas; a son, Steve Oates of Woodland; a grandson; and two nephews, Robert Oates and Richard Oates, both of Rockfield.
