Paxton House repairs not in budget

The city says that funding for the renovation of the historic Paxton House is not in the budget this year. The house, which was built in the 1880s and named after Eugena Paxton, is located at 316 E. 10th Ave. Linda Ryan, grant manager for the city, said that the building recently was included in the Kentucky Renaissance District, meaning state funding could be available for renovations. We dont have any plans right now. The last plan they had for the house was for the expansion of city offices, Ryan said. Its possible down the road we might do something with it. Bowling Green City Manager Chuck Coates had said that the city was waiting on proposals from an architect on the renovation of the house. Coates was out of town and couldnt be reached today. The house was bought by the city 15 years ago and used as office space for the police department, but it has been empty for the past five years. Landmark Association member Jonathan Jeffrey said the longer the building sits without occupants, the worse its condition will become. Our stance on historic preservation isnt necessarily putting businesses in these buildings, but to preserve them, Jeffrey said. With the proximity to the justice center, it would be nice if they could use it for something related to the courts. Jeffrey says that the Paxton House is one of few really outstanding examples of downtown residences in the area. We just hope they restore it, Jeffrey said. That would be great.
