Jazz legend Chuck Mangione will open the Capitol Arts Center season with a Friday night concert that organizers say is sure to please lovers of contemporary jazz. Were extremely excited, Capitol Marketing Director Tracy Morris said. We couldnt have picked a better act to open the season. People around here have been wanting true jazz music, and thats why we decided to give it to them. Mangione has been an acclaimed trumpet/flugelhorn player and a composer for more than 40 years. He was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1970 for his major label debut Hill Where the Lord Hides and in 1973 for Land of Make Believe. Mangione later won a Grammy for his album Bellavia. In 1977, Mangiones album Feels So Good became a hit around the globe. He won his second Grammy Award the next year for Children of Sanchez. While the titles of Mangiones albums may not ring a bell to some, Morris is sure the tunes will be recognizable to most people. His most recognizable tune is Feels So Good, she said. He also did some themes a song featured in the 76 Olympic Games and (a tune featured in) the 80 Winter Olympics. Morris said all of this stuff was done early on in Mangiones career. He took some time off (beginning in 1989) because he didnt want to do it anymore, she said. When Mangione returned to music in 1994, he dedicated himself to music education by performing Cat in the Hat matinees for children, educators and parents, according to information provided by the Capitol. Hes a very personable guy, said Morris. Mangione will be performing at the Capitol Arts Center at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are on sale at the Capitol, at 416 E. Main St. Main floor tickets cost $32.50. Balcony tickets are $27.50. For more information, call the Capitol at (270) 782-ARTS or (877) 694-ARTS, which is a toll-free number.
