Barren River Area District Development unemployment figures were slightly down in June, according to the latest figures from the Cabinet for Workforce Development. Monroe County, whose 17.3 percent unemployment rate was highest in the state in May, dropped to 10.4 percent in June the most significant change in the district. Overall, the 10-county BRADD region, which includes Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson and Warren counties, declined from 4.5 percent to 4.3 percent in June, a slight increase from the 4.1 percent reported a year ago. Barrens 3.1 percent and Warrens 3.4 percent were lowest in the region in the June report while Logans 7.6 percent and Butlers 7 percent rates were the regions second and third highest. The report, which also released numbers for the previous year, showed Monroes 10.5 percent jobless rate was fourth-highest in the state between June 2000 and June 2001. Carter County reported the highest unemployment rate 13.8 percent while Jessamine, Franklin and Fayette counties each reported 2.2 percent jobless figures, the lowest in the state for the year. Despite a sluggish economy, the report indicates the number of counties with double-digit jobless rates dropped from nine to five between June 2000 and June 2001. Overall, the state had 4.2 percent unemployment during the most recent reporting period.
