Gators win district in eighth

Somebody finally had to cross home plate. The only questions were when that would happen and who would be the hero. Greenwood and Warren Central went scoreless for seven innings before the Lady Gators eked out a 1-0 win in eight innings in the 14th District Softball Tournament at Warren East High School on Thursday. Both teams advance to the Fourth Region Tournament, which begins Monday at Logan County High School. It was the Lady Gators Andrea Fitzpatrick who finally ended the offensive woes for both teams. Her two-out infield single deep in the hole between third base and shortstop scored Jessica Mustread to give Greenwood the win. I had been in a slump before this and I knew it was my time, Fitzpatrick said. I wanted it to stop. It seemed Fitzpatrick wouldnt get her opportunity to end the game. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Greenwood put runners on second and third with only one out when Lindsay Klineline laid a bunt down the first-base line. Warren Central first baseman April Bowlin prolonged the game when she threw Greenwood runner Kathy Church out at the plate on the play that even a television replay couldnt prove the correct result. Greenwood coach Penny Reece stormed out of the third-base coachs box to voice her disapproval of the call. It was the second call of the night that Reece voiced her opinion on and thought it cost the Lady Gators a coveted run. With two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the first, Amanda Montgomery rifled a shot to right field. What seemed to be a run-scoring single instead ended up as a groundball out as Montgomery was called out at first on another miniscule-close play. I thought there were a couple bad calls that cost us, Reece said. But we fought through it. You just dont want calls to decide the game. Although when that possible run didnt go to Greenwood in the first inning, few expected a scoreless game through seven innings. That was the result of strong pitching performances by Warren Centrals Jenny Wilson and Church. Church, the tournament MVP, gave up only three hits and walked no Warren Central batters and Wilson nearly matched that. The former Greenwood player who began at Warren Central this season gave up only five hits and also didnt walk anybody as she and the Lady Dragons nearly stunned the now 32-3 Lady Gators. Ive never been more proud of my team, Warren Central coach Stan Murphy said. If we get a hit here or there, we win the game. But Ive said before, when we come to play, we can play. I saw it in their eyes before the game that they came to play today. Ive also looked in their eyes before and saw nothing. Warren Central (18-20) had runners in scoring position once Thursday. A much-needed run stood on third base with two outs in the sixth inning, but the Lady Dragons couldnt convert. The Lady Gators chances werent much better. Besides the possible run-scoring first and the eighth innings, Greenwood had two-out scoring chances in the third and sixth innings but couldnt capitalize, either. Thats a concern for Reece as her Lady Gators didnt mount much of an offensive threat. We knew how to hit and should have hit, but we didnt have any confidence up there, Reece said. Its bumfuzzling to us as coaches because we were helpless. Maybe well have to see if Dale Carnegie is having one of those confidence classes near Bowling Green so we can take them to see him.
