Raqueal Pullums, 12, was so relaxed that while getting a massage she nearly fell asleep. She was already a little tired from performing with the State Street Baptist Church Spiritual Dance Team at the 5th Annual Family Fun Day on Saturday at Preston Miller Park, just outside of the Russell Sims Aquatic Park. I love to dance, Pullums said, holding her wiggling, 2-year-old sister, Tamika, as the toddlers face was painted. Pullums was one of about 300 people who participated in the activities Saturday morning. Vendors for the free event included both Bowling Green hospitals, personal trainers, message therapists, the Girl Scouts, dance demonstrations and the Natcher Elementary School Jumpin Jaguars. The Warren County Council on Physical Activity organizes the annual event to help motivate families to get off the couch, get out of the house and move. This group began in 1997 and the reason we started it up is that heart disease is the number one cause of death in Warren County, event co-coordinator Denise Boyd said. The major risk factor for heart disease is a sedentary lifestyle, she said. One of our missions by doing this event is to let Warren County know that there are fun forms of physical activity, Boyd said. We want people in the community to be able to come out and see and try activities in a non-threatening environment, she said. People who ordinarily wouldnt step foot into a dance studio might consider stepping out with their spouses and children to learn the Electric Slide dance. I think Bowling Green has a reputation for being a family friendly city because theres events like these almost every month, said Katrina Phelps, who attended the event with her husband, Nathan, and their two children, Riley, 7, and Alyssa, 9.Parents who are raising children really appreciate that, Phelps said.
