Listen to the lyrics

… How many of us have considered what is and is not fit for children to see or read? … I took the liberty of going through my own childs CD collection once. I could not distinguish many of the lyrics on the discs, so I looked at the printed lyrics. I had never been aware that free speech, (makes it OK) to be filled with racial bias, hate, sexual perversion, killing and suicide. Not once did I find any redemptive message. At that point, I confiscated the trash and it became a rule that such noise was not acceptable in our home. My childs friends also were informed that if I found such garbage, it would be destroyed. True, I was not a popular parent. … Tough. …We have an obligation to give (our) children every chance to become the best citizens possible. If this entails censorship beyond what the law allows, so be it. We will never have total control over what children listen to as entertainment when away from home. The best we can do is provide serious and well-explained guidelines. Each time I hear of another school shooting, I have to wonder what the causes may have been. After what I listened to and read in some CD jackets, I had to consider the music. If the Antichrist dwells among us, we may not have to look beyond the nearest store that sells appalling material that passes as music. While it may be true that televised programming and video material plays a part, it is the music that sends the most dangerous subliminal message. If you doubt it, you have only to read the lyrics. Then think the next time a childs blood runs in a school yard or hall … or, possibly, your home.Judith C. BarberBowling Green
