With this ring – or not – I thee wed

MUNFORDVILLE Some single residents of Hart County Jail who didnt have a literal ball and chain during their incarceration might have a figurative one when they leave. Hart County Fiscal Court has adopted guidelines for weddings at the jail. We dont have the right to refuse an inmate if he or she wants to get married, Hart County Jailer Bill Cartmill said. The jail, which has been open a little more than 18 months, already has seen the nuptials of three couples. We felt we needed a policy, Cartmill said. The new policy requires inmates to give advance notice to the jail chaplain and exchange no rings, in keeping with the jails no jewelry policy. There are no state laws prohibiting such unions from taking place. In fact, state inmates who want to be married usually are allowed to do so after the jail in which they are lodged gets the OK from the state Department of Corrections. Most county jails allow jail weddings but have a variety of regulations governing the ceremony. Instead of traditional wedding white, incarcerated brides and grooms are clad in orange the color of their jail jumpsuits. And while many jails allow the couple to seal their union with a kiss, they must do so with their lips separated by the bullet-resistant glass of jail visiting rooms. Allen County Jailer James Patrick allows newlyweds to exchange wedding bands the only jewelry inmates are allowed to wear in that facility. But the bride and groom cant touch. We make it as brief a ceremony as we can, Patrick said. They understand before its done, they wont be able to wear civilian clothes. We keep them in orange. But Patrick tries to talk inmates into waiting for marriage until they have served their jail time. I caution them against doing it, he said. Still, some inmates marry anyway, Patrick said, estimating that one couple a year decide to take the plunge while one of the pair is jailed. When its over, he goes back to his cell and the bride goes the other way, Patrick said.
