Cross Ridge neighbors weary of mail problems

Cross Ridge subdivision residents have become their neighbors keeper. Or, at least, their neighbors mail keeper. Jack Frost, former president of Cross Ridge Homeowners Preservation Association, said he receives someone elses mail at least every other week. Ill get the guys across the street or the guys next door, he said. We always get our mail, but thats not because of the post office. Its because we all know each other. Its kind of disheartening, cause you wonder what youre missing. In October, Frost received someone elses mail three days in a row, and the door to the neighborhoods cluster mailboxes was left unlocked. I had to catch the carrier and ask him to lock the boxes, Frost said. When he complained, a supervisor said mail carriers werent used to the subdivisions cluster boxes, Frost said. They had an excuse, so what are you going to do? Frost asked. Its not like you can tell them, Im going to have all my mail delivered by Bobs Mail Service. They kind of got you there. But Post Master Judy Myers said the only Cross Ridge complaint she was aware of came when two houses with identical street numbers but different street names received each others mail. I addressed the carrier and that problem was corrected, she said. Still, Cross Ridge resident Stan Peterie said repeated incidents of late and missing mail have prompted him to call the post office and complain three times, to no avail, he said. In April, his daughter stumbled upon his $979 state income tax refund check two weeks after it was mailed. It was a block up from our house in a cul-de-sac, he said. It had been run over and rained on. She was out walking the dog and saw this envelope and our name on it. A house payment mailed Thursday was found in neighbor Noy Oulays yard and returned to Peterie on Friday evening. Im not one to complain, Peterie said. But youre talking money now. Oulay, who found mail in his yard again Tuesday, theorized that the carrier drops mail while loading the bags, especially on days when there are large amounts of mail. I live across the street from the (cluster) boxes, and Im always picking up mail in my yard, he said. Its been constant. Mail is very important. It could be a bill or something, and I think the post-people should do something about it. I guess if a piece of mail blows away, they just dont want to chase it. Twice this past summer and fall Oulay had to explain to Bowling Green Municipal Utilities and Western Kentucky Gas that he never received his bill after the utility companies charged him a late fee. I asked them, How can you charge me with a late fee when I never received the mail? Oulay said. Maintenance is another problem with the cluster mailboxes, which need repairs after steel poles put in front of the boxes to protect them were hit in October, resident Annette Wetzel said. One of those poles was knocked down, she said. One pole has already fallen, and the other one is about to. … Theyve never come to fix it, and I have one of those poles in my garage. … I dont want those poles lying around where the kids could pick them up and use them for a weapon. Myers also acknowledges that the Cross Ridge route the City-7 route that covers Scottsville Road, Campbell Lane and Greenwood Mall may need to be revamped. Our routes are growing, she said. We have already adjusted two routes, and we are looking at making adjustments to City-7.Still, Bowling Green gets excellent ratings on nationwide surveys conducted by the U.S. Postal Service, Myers said. Occasionally, a piece of mail gets delivered wrong, she said. When we know about it, we bring it to the carriers attention. They try very hard to deliver it correctly the first time.
