State begins investigation into poultry-processing plant

The state has begun investigating Cagles-Keystone Foods poultry-processing plant in Clinton County, where a recent news report said the plant may have employed children.Eddie Jacobs, spokesman for the Kentucky Labor Cabinet, said the investigation of the plant near Albany began Tuesday. Jacobs would not release details about the inquiry until its conclusion.Jacobs cited a Lexington Herald-Leader article when asked why the investigation was initiated.Cagles-Keystone Foods, which was awarded about $40 million in tax breaks to create jobs, was the subject of a Herald-Leader article Jan. 14. Former workers at the plant said they had seen young-looking Hispanic people working there. And a former human-resources director said she had fired a Hispanic girl who admitted she had used the identification of an adult to get a job at the plant.The article also included interviews with two Hispanic immigrants who said they had crossed the U.S. border illegally and used fake identification to get jobs at Cagles. One said she was 12; the other said he was 15.Tim Lawson, the general manager of the plant, did not return a call.
