A trail of abduction, theft and death that spanned more than 1,000 miles through rural Alabama to a Franklin truck stop and beyond arrived at a dead end Wednesday. Authorities discovered the body of a woman at a rural site near Nauvoo, Ala., late Wednesday that they suspect is that of missing carnival cook Francis Murray, 67, of Talladega, Ala. Nauvoo is a small rural community about 45 miles northwest of Birmingham. Murray last was seen Dec. 30 as she drover her pickup truck with her passengers part-time employee Michael Wayne Eggers, 33, of Jasper, Ala., and his teenage son. Eggers was arrested Tuesday in Kissimmee, Fla., and charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and receiving stolen property in connection with the theft of Murrays truck. An FBI agent found the pickup a white 1988 four-door Chevrolet abandoned Tuesday at Speedway Truck stop in Franklin, said David Beyer, a spokesman in the FBIs Louisville office. The tip about where to find the stolen pickup and an apparent confession in a slaying came as authorities arrested Eggers. An FBI agent from Bowling Green immediately was dispatched to search Franklin truck stops for the pickup, which then was stored at Bowling Green police department before being transported to the FBIs offices in Louisville. Multiple agencies including Jasper (Ala.) Police Department, Walker County Sheriffs Department and the FBI in Alabama began searching an area near Jasper on Wednesday. FBI spokesman Craig Dahle said that search ended late Wednesday, when Eggers led searchers to a rural Walker County, Ala., site where the body was uncovered. Investigators found that Murrays ATM bank card had been used at least twice since her disappearance on Dec. 31 in Lexington, where surveillance video showed a man attempting to conceal his identity as he accessed the account, and on Jan. 1 in New Albany, Ind., the FBI said. Federal agents arrested Eggers after tracking him through telephone calls.
