Simpson County plans ambitious fire upgrade

FRANKLIN Simpson County residents could be living a little closer to a fire hall within months. An architectural firm that designed an expansion of the Simpson County Jail, Architecture Plus, will design four new county fire substations for the north, south, east and west corners of the county, Judge-Executive Jim Henderson said. The idea is to have all county residents within five miles of a fire station a move that could lower insurance premiums, he said. Not many counties are making that kind of investment in fire protection in the rural areas, Henderson said. Its exciting to think we are going to do something to benefit every one in the county. County officials are trying to convince landowners in each part of the county to donate land for each of the fire halls. Each building would need a half an acre to an acre of easily accessible land. Each building is estimated to cost $50,000; equipment will cost $25,000 to $50,000 for each facility. Plans for another building project call for a new justice center to be built on one of two pieces of downtown property one near the jail and another on Main Street. The Justice Center Project Development Board will meet Jan. 10 to discuss the building and site locations.
