Saturday night will be An Evening to Remember for the Capitol Arts Alliance in downtown Bowling Green. Ladies in evening gowns and men in tuxedos will dine under a tent on the corner of Park Row and State Street as Harry Connick Sr. and his Big Band entertain with popular tunes. Its a big party …, said the Capitols executive director, Carrie Barnett. But the event is also a fund-raiser for the Capitols educational programs, including School Days shows such as this weeks production of Stuart Little, which drew 2,700 children to the Capitol Arts Center on Main Street in only two days. We serve over 36,000 children every year at little or no cost to the child, Barnett said. And you have to have money to do it. Tickets to An Evening to Remember cost $100 each and will be available at the Capitol through Friday. The event starts at 8 p.m. Saturday. The cost of the ticket includes dinner, entertainment by Connick and dancing afterward to music by Traffic Jam. There also will be a drawing for a one year lease on a Chrysler PT Cruiser, which has been donated to the fund-raising cause by Martin Autoplex. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each. Barnett said she thinks people will enjoy the special evening, especially the music of Harry Connick Sr., who is district attorney in New Orleans and the father of famous crooner and actor Harry Connick Jr.Its going to be a real intimate performance, Barnett said. Harry Connick Sr. began following the music of the big band era when he was in high school, according to information provided by the Capitol. Through the years he served in the United States Navy, graduated from college with a degree in business administration, got married and opened a record store with his wife, Anita, who became one of the first female judges in New Orleans. Later, Connick and his wife earned law degrees and had children. Through the years, Harry Connick Sr. mingled music with law. In 1998, he joined the Nelson Riddle Orchestra in performing A Salute to the music of Frank Sinatra. The show has been playing at engagements ever since.
