Democrat Bryan LeSieur and Republican Tim Coleman could challenge each other for the commonwealths attorneys seat in Butler, Edmonson, Hancock and Ohio counties in November. LeSieur, a Brownsville attorney, and Coleman, the current Butler County attorney, were nominated by the leaders of their respective parties Wednesday after Republican C. Dale Bartlett Jr., who was running unopposed for the seat, died Saturday of lung cancer. But Butler County Judge-Executive Hugh Evans, the Democratic Executive Committee chairman for Butler County, said LeSieur hadnt accepted his nomination as of Thursday morning. The two parties have to notify the state secretary of states office by Thursday afternoon so the candidates names can appear on the ballot in November. Bartletts wife, District Judge Renona Browning, appeared at the Republican caucus in Beaver Dam to thank party members for supporting her husband. I wanted to tell you how much it meant not only to Dale but to his whole family, Browning said. The support Bartlett received in the primary was overwhelming, especially in Ohio County, where he lived, Browning said. Election night was one of the few times I ever saw Dale just sit down and cry, she said. That is one of the best memories Ill have of this past year. Incumbent Greg Seelig, who lost to Bartlett in the May Republican primary, had been mentioned as a possible nominee for his party but withdrew from consideration before nominating began. Ive thought long and hard about the situation in light of the recent events, Seelig said. I dont think it would be appropriate for me to go further in this process. Coleman was the only person nominated from the floor during the Republican caucus. Jerry Guffy, chairman of the Republican Executive Committee for the 2nd Congressional District, heard a motion to end nominations and select Coleman by acclamation. Coleman said he was surprised by the nights events and appreciated the opportunity. In this district, were going to have to return as much justice as we can, he said. Im not talented at many things, but one thing I can do is work hard, and I will work hard at that.
