The Russellville-based parent company of WBVR-FM is increasing its holdings in Bowling Green. WRUS is buying Hilltopper Network including 50,000-watt WBLG-FM and full-time, 1,000-watts WBGN-AM in Bowling Green, WDXR-AM and WDXR-FM in Paducah and WCBF-FM in Mayfield which are owned by Bowling Green resident Wes Strader and others. We just firmed up the deal a few days ago and I told the employees in Paducah (Friday morning) and in Bowling Green (Friday afternoon), Strader said. Speculation of a pending sale began shortly before the official announcement in May that Strader and his station no longer would be the official voice of the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers. But the station, which for 36 years was Westerns sports mouthpiece, quickly switched its colors and became the regions official University of Kentucky network station. This sale has no correlation with the Hilltoppers switch, Strader said. It just came out of the blue. They approached us, and they have such an outstanding organization. … There is a big move in the industry for acquisitions by large companies, so it looked like a good situation for all of us to grow and have a bigger impact in the market. All the stations formats and names will remain the same, and WBGN will continue to be known as the Gator. Staffing also will remain the same. Strader will become a vice president of WRUS.Though WRUS has a Bowling Green radio presence in WBVR-FM, the Hilltopper holdings will continue to compete with it for listeners and advertising dollars. They want us to continue doing things as we have, he said. The sale, a cash buyout, is subject to Federal Communications Commission approval and should be finalized in about three months. Bill McGinnis, an owner of WRUS, was unavailable for comment.
