INDIANAPOLIS KJs Sluggers won the American Softball Association Midwest National Championship on Sunday after the team fought its way out of the losers bracket. The Warren County, Ky.-based Sluggers, a 10-and-under girls team, had to win three games Sunday to claim the national title after losing to Chicago, 5-4.A team was allowed one loss before being eliminated in the three-day tournament. We knew we had to win three games, team Manager Kenny Evans said. … We were determined to come back to Warren County with the national title. On Friday, the Sluggers beat Bloomington, Minn. (5-0) and Prior Lake, Minn. (8-0) before losing to Chicago. This game was not a good one to lose, Evans said. This loss would make the girls have to play seven more games in order to win the national championship, but with a good night of rest and staying focused on our season-long dream, I thought the girls could possibly make it. Facing the possibility of elimination Saturday, the Sluggers walked past Richfield, Minn. (7-3), Lakeview, Minn. (10-2) and Oak Lawn, Ill. (14-2), before a three-hour marathon against Chicago ended in the Sluggers favor at 13-10.This game was the most exciting game of the tournament, Evans said. We faced the threat of elimination in every inning and would come from behind to retake the lead, but then would have to do it again in the next at-bat. On Sunday, the Sluggers beat Des Moines, Iowa, 12-6, before advancing to defeat the Plainfield (Ill.) Panthers, 10-3 and 10-1, to claim the national championship.
