Roughly 76 percent of people arrested for DUI in southcentral Kentucky during 1998 were convicted on that charge, according to the 1998 Crime in Kentucky report. The others saw their charges dropped or amended to lesser charges. The report is an annual Kentucky State Police compilation of city and county crime information. In 1998, Warren County accounted for 1,496 DUI arrests the fourth-highest rate in the state after Jefferson Countys 5,586, Fayette Countys 2,583 and Kenton Countys 1,512, the report said. Hart Countys DUI conviction rate of 93 percent 113 of 121 arrests was the regions highest, the report said. Hart County Attorney J.D. Craddock credited a good judge and dedicated juries for the high conviction rate, he said. If you blow a .10 (blood alcohol level) in Hart County, youre either going to plead guilty or youre going to trial, Craddock said. I sure dont want drunk drivers out on the road. Its amazing what a conscientious panel of jurors can do. Warren County convicted 1,235, or 82 percent, of the 1,496 people arrested for DUIs here in 1998, the report said. It had the regions third-highest conviction rate behind Allen Countys rate of 83 percent. Of the 143 people arrested for DUI in Allen County, 119 people were convicted, the report said. Edmonson County has the lowest DUI conviction percentage at 56 percent. In 1998, Edmonson County recorded 69 DUI arrests, but only 39 convictions. While the report measured convictions and arrests in Kentucky during 1998, some numbers could be unaccounted for if the arrest came in 1998 and the conviction came in 1999.Across Kentucky, law enforcement authorities arrested 41,428 people for DUI in 1998 and received 32,837 convictions for a 79 percent conviction rate, the report said. Of those arrested for driving under the influence, 84 percent are men and 90 percent are white, the report said.
