Six Warren County teams are among 21 teams signed up for Saturdays American Softball Association 8-and-under national tournament at Basil Griffin Park, according to tournament Director Brenda Petty. It will be the first time ever a national tournament has been played in Kentucky, Petty said. Every state bids on a national tourney and we were able to get it this year. I hope people will come out and enjoy it. The undefeated Warren County Sluggers (18-0 this season) hope to take home the crown and keep their unblemished record intact. Sluggers coach Stacey Lamb said his team has a good chance of winning the ASA national crown. I feel like weve got a good shot at it, Lamb said. Weve played in five tourneys this year and won all of them. I dont think weve had a game thats closer than 10 runs. The secret to the Sluggers success has been defense, Lamb said. In one tournament, we caught about 10 flyballs, he said. Our defense for this age group is way above average. Very seldom do you see girls catch outfield flies three or four are good at catching outfield flies. While the Sluggers have dominated so far, this weekends tourney could provide some stiff competition for the Kentucky champions. I want to see more competition, but I still want to win, Lamb said. It would be nice to say youve earned something. Lamb said the Sluggers should be the prohibitive favorites, thanks to such speedsters as Lacey Walker and Jennifer Wetzel and the hot-hitting Stephanie Edwards. Unless theres a real powerhouse coming in we dont know about, we expect to win it, Lamb said. Matchups will be paired Friday, Petty said. The first games will be played at 8 a.m. Saturday on fields 5, 6 and 7.
