Inmates should help pay for stay

There is an old saying that claims crime doesnt pay. If crime doesnt pay, the Daviess County Detention Center at least wants criminals to fork over some money. County officials think inmates should have to fund a portion of their jail stay. Initial estimates show the fee potentially could raise $250,000. Several state jailers lauded the plan.Inmates after July 15 will pay a $20 booking fee and a $20 per diem fee. Prisoners also will be required to pay for their medical and dental charges.About 150 of the states jailers, magistrates and judge-executives attended a presentation given by Daviess County Jailer Harold Taylor last week where he outlined the plan. Its a logical idea. Criminals cost society a great deal of money, so they should pay it back. I see it as a means of having the person who commits a crime having to pay society back for their stay, Warren County Jailer Jackie Strode said. Its true that some inmates may not have ability to pay, but perhaps a surprising number can contribute to their own incarceration. Taylor estimated he will be able to collect at least a portion of the fees from 60 to 70 percent of the inmates.Of course, prisoners found innocent would be refunded the money they paid. This is an idea that not only Kentucky but other states should consider. Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for inmates room, board, medical or dental expenses. Why should you violate the law but then get free meals and medical checkups? This is hardly unfair to the inmates. As the Libertarians say, There aint no such thing as a free lunch. Which means there aint no such thing as a free jail cell, either. If youre being fed and housed at taxpayers expense, you should have to chip in.
