Willard Carr Hanson, 72, of Bowling Green died at 3:25 p.m. April 4, 2000, at The Medical Center.The Woodstock, New Brunswick, native was a retired radio and television broadcaster at Western Kentucky University, where he was host of Moonlight Serenade, a World War II Army veteran and a member of AFTRA-SAG Union. His career began in 1951 at NBC in New York City. He worked in Boston as the host of the American Airlines Classic Music Til Dawn, and in the mid-1940s joined the staff of WTIC radio and television in Hartford, Conn., as a host of several radio programs and a television news anchor. In the late 1970s, he moved to the NBC television affiliate in Hartford as a news anchor. He spent a number of years in Washington, D.C., as an international program host for Voice of America. In 1990, he retired from VOA and joined WKYU-FMs staff, retiring in 1999 but continuing to produce and host Moonlight Serenade. He was a son of the late Willard Everett Hanson and Anne Dorothy Carr Hanson.Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Home, Lovers Lane chapel. The body will be cremated. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Bill Hanson WKYU-FM Memorial Program Fund, c/o WKYU-FM, Western Kentucky University, 1 Big Red Way, Bowling Green, Ky. 42101.Survivors include his wife, Shirley Nuzum Hanson; a daughter, Paula Hanson of Bowling Green; two sons, Mark E. Hanson of Oakton, Va., and Gregory W. Hanson of Annandale, Va.; a sister, Deborah Hanson Carlson of Deerfield, Ill.; a brother, Lowell D. Hanson of Schenectady, N.Y.; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
