Boys, girls trade games with Logan

It was an emotional night at Greenwood High School as five Lady Gators and seven Gators said their last goodbyes on Senior Night. The girls game got off to a slow start until Logan Countys Kaneshi Hart scored the first points of the game at the 5:30 mark in the first quarter, and Greenwood didnt score its first point until Lyndsay Younkin hit a free throw with 3:05 left in the quarter. The game remained close throughout the first period, and at the end of the quarter, the Lady Gators were up 9-8.Logan County began to pull away in the second quarter with their press and led going into the locker room 30-18.In the third quarter, Greenwood was able to pull within five on a couple of occasions, but by the end of the third, the Lady Cougars extended their lead back out to 10, 44-34The Lady Gators had a run in the final quarter and tied the game at 49 with just a little over a minute left. In the last minute, Younkin fouled out; she led the Lady Gators in scoring with 24. The Lady Cougars went on to win 53-50.The boys game got off to a quick start. Greenwood won the tap and Greenwood scored on the first possession with a dunk by Corey Hart. Logan Countys Bradley Grise and Clint Haynes scored on 3-point baskets two consecutive trips down the floor in the first quarter. The 3s were also falling for Greenwood, the first one by Joey Stratton. Greenwood pulled away in the first quarter with the help of Hart, who scored with a dunk and then a 3 on the next possession. The score at the end of the first quarter was Greenwood 23, Logan County 12.Logan County was able to take advantage of a Gator slump in the second quarter. The Cougars were able to cut the Gator lead to single digits and at the half trailed Greenwood by 6, 33-27.Greenwoods slump continued into the third quarter. Logan County was able to tie the game at 35 with 5:00 left in the quarter. The Cougars took the lead 41:38 on a three by Grise. Greenwoods Stratton then answered with a trey of his own. Most of the remainder of the quarter saw the two teams trading baskets. Greenwood had a one-point lead at the end of the third, 47-46.Tom (Frericks) not being at a hundred percent took some of the wind out of our sails, but our guys made some big plays, said Gator coach Jason Couch. Frericks was playing with an ankle injury suffered in practice. Both teams lit up the scoreboard with a slew of 3s in the final quarter. The game remained tight in the beginning of the fourth period. Haynes hit the final 3-pointer with only 10 seconds left in the game, but it was too little, too late; Greenwood went on to win 79-71.Both teams shot well from 3-point range with Greenwood hitting nine and Logan County 12. Greenwood was led in scoring by Corey Hart, 23 points. Logan County was led by Clint Haynes with 20.Their boys played a heck of a game, said Logan County coach Mike Haynes. Some of their boys really stepped up and made the important plays. Our two seniors off the bench (Ben Keltner and Brandon Decker) really stepped up, said Couch.
