It took a jury a little more than an hour Wednesday to acquit a prominent Bowling Green plastic surgeon accused of raping a co-worker at his Scottsville Road home in January. The jury acquitted Dr. Joseph Zaydon, 58, on a charge of first-degree rape following two and a half days of arguments and testimony before Warren Circuit Judge Thomas Lewis. Zaydon, who was unavailable for comment Thursday, was represented by Bowling Green attorney David Broderick and Covington attorney Philip Taliaserro. Broderick was unavailable for comment Thursday. Warren County Commonwealths Attorney Steve Wilson, who prosecuted the case, said allegations of acquaintance rape typically are two conflicting versions of events that can only be decided by a jury trial. The woman told Kentucky State Police on Jan. 11 that she visited Zaydons Alvaton home Jan. 10 and testified that her clothes were ripped off and she was raped before she ran from the home partially clothed. Throughout the trial, Zaydons attorneys countered that the sex was consensual. At the time, the woman was attending Western Kentucky University and working part-time for Zaydons medical practice at 720 Second Ave. During opening arguments and cross-examination of the woman Monday, attorneys argued that her version of events was inconsistent between when she talked to police and when she spoke to grand jurors five months later. The woman repeatedly broke down in tears and covered her face with her hands during attorneys specific questions about the incident. Zaydons attorneys pointed out during the trial that the woman was having financial difficulties at the time she said she was assaulted and has been threatening to file a civil suit seeking financial reparations. Wilson said Thursday that he didnt think the allegation ever was about money and never would have proceeded with the case if he thought it was.
