Richard W. Gibson has graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Gibson, an air defense officer, is the son of Victoria L. Schmied of Louisville and Jerry W. Gibson of Russellville.
His wife, Melissa, is the daughter of William T. and Sonja A. Taylor of Russellville.
Gibson graduated in 1989 from Logan County High School.
Several members of the Omicron Sigma Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha service sorority, based in Bowling Green, attended the organizations 97th National Founders Day Celebration in Atlanta.
Attending were chapter President Cheryl Lewis-Smith, Ersa Austin, Vivian Glass and Frances Graham, all of Bowling Green, Elizabeth Sebree-Douglas of Elizabethtown and Barbara Montgomery-Pollock of Clarksville, Tenn.
The celebration coincided with the Martin Luthern King holiday weekend. Activities included a visit to the state Capitol, a reception with Soror Coretta Scott King, a tour of the King Center and special services commemorating the founding of the sorority.
