A Glasgow church is one of several churches participating a Kentucky Baptist Convention program aimed at breathing new life into Christianity in Russia where it was once smothered. Calvary Baptist Church in Glasgow gives $200 a month to pay the pastors salary and church expenses for a congregation in the city of Rybinsk money that has enabled the pastor to quit his other job as an ambulance driver to minister full time. Kentuckians have made 1,503 mission trips to Russia as part of the convention program. When the Baptists came home, many could not forget what they saw:An old woman traded her late husbands war medals for bread. Russians walked miles to sit or stand in church services that lasted for hours, weeping at the simple gift of a Bible. Since the convention started its focus on Russia in 1993, Kentucky Baptist churches have given more than $1.5 million and helped build or renovate 40 churches in Russia. The convention concentrates now on mission work in other countries, but Russia isnt forgotten. Some Baptists continue to raise money and even make pilgrimages on their own to keep the faith flowing in Russia. Its like a part of my heart is still over there with those people, said Shirley Woodson, a Louisville nurse who made three trips to Russia. Its a real eye-opener to see people who do not have medicine and have so much critically wrong with them, said Ruthe Lusk of Louisville, who visited Russia twice with medical teams. Some churches and individuals are still working in Russia. They just couldnt quit. Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Louisville has sent shoes, underwear and socks to an orphanage in the Bryansk region about 200 miles south of Moscow. Immanuel Baptist Church in Paducah hopes to raise as much as $22,000 this year about two months of operating expenses for the church to continue its work with a church in Klintsy. Currently, the Baptist Convention has established new partnerships in Tanzania and Poland, pledging to evangelize there for at least three years.
