Investigators still are trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed the 26-year-old Roses department store and caused about $4.5 million in damages. The fire cause has not been determined, although we have determined the area of the building where the fire started, so we are continuing to investigate, said Gerry Brown, Bowling Green Fire Department chief. Hopefully we can nail that down, but this is just like any other fire investigation sometimes it takes awhile, he saidThe fire department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are working together on the investigation, and some damaged portions of the building have been removed to facilitate the search for clues, Brown said. Bowling Green police responded to a burglary alarm at Roses in Western Gateway Shopping Center at 5:17 a.m. Sunday. As they checked for a burglary or other disturbance, they saw smoke and called Bowling Green Fire Department. When firefighters arrived at the store about 5:30 a.m. the building was fully involved with heavy black smoke coming out in all directions, said Walter Jordan, assistant fire chief. Store Manager Richard OConnell said the burglar alarm and fire alarm are on the same system. If one goes, the other goes, he said. Fire investigators had hoped to begin searching the remains Tuesday to determine what started the fire but decided to wait until Wednesday to enter the building, Jordan said. Roses personnel began returning layaway payments Wednesday at a space set up in neighboring Houchens Market No. 32. Customers seeking refunds must bring current receipts in between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., OConnell said. Company officials have not decided if the store will relocate or even reopen but they did tour a few alternate sites Tuesday, OConnell said. King Home Care and Dukes Sporting Goods, which were housed in space next to Roses, suffered water and smoke damage. King Home Care has temporarily relocated to the Pro-Care Home Health office at 1260 Campbell Lane, Suite 400. Phone calls were forwarded there Wednesday, said Tony Ward, co-owner and administrator of King Home Care.
