UALR wins top seed in volleyball

The University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State each claimed a share of the Sun Belt Conferences volleyball regular-season title Sunday after finishing with 14-2 league marks. A coin flip determined that Arkansas-Little Rock (17-10, 14-2 SBC) will be the No. 1 seed in the SBC Tournament, scheduled to run Friday through Sunday at Trojan Fieldhouse in Little Rock, Ark. Western Kentucky is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 5 Louisiana Tech in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal matchup on Friday. The senior defender, who also was a first-team all-conference selection, scored three goals and added two assists while leading the Hilltopper defense this year. All of Robbins goals came in conference play. Also named to the All-Tournament team were Southwest Missouri States James Bertrand, Mark Modersohn, Aaron Rickard and Severin Lwali; Bradleys Dan Goldstein, Joel Ivaska and Stephen Wylie, Creightons David Wright and Angel Rivillo; and Evansvilles Robert Barker and Dustin Otteson. Bertrand was the tournaments most valuable player. Southwest Missouri State won the conference tournament championship to clinch the leagues NCAA bid. Bradley ended Westerns season with a 4-2 win over the Hilltoppers in a first-round game of the MVC Tournament at L.T. Smith Stadium on Nov. 7.
