Lady Tops’ Roseland, Gorham garner C-USA All-Academic Team honors

Western Kentucky women’s soccer players Nicole Roseland and Sarah Gorham were selected to the 2017 Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league office announced Thursday, with Roseland earning first-team honors and Gorham collecting a second-team nod.

Roseland and Gorham picked up the all-academic accolades for the first time in their careers.

From Altamonte Springs, Fla., Roseland started every match this season as WKU’s holding midfielder. The junior played key roles on both sides of the ball, serving as a defensive stopper and helping set up WKU’s offensive attack.

Under her watch this season, WKU surrendered 16 goals, fourth-fewest in C-USA. Roseland helped the Lady Toppers to five shutouts in 2017 and pushed the team to a 337-minute shutout streak over a four-match span in October. Roseland owns a 3.85 grade-point average as a finance major.

One of four field players to start every match this season, Gorham played 1,478 minutes, second-most among WKU field players. The redshirt junior from Lexington assisted on WKU’s match-winner against FIU on Oct. 15 that was part of a late-season four-match winning streak for the Lady Toppers. Gorham ranked second among Lady Toppers with 30 shots on the year and played a key role in the organization of the midfield throughout the season.

In the classroom, Gorham has a 3.96 GPA as a sport management major and is a three-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal, one of the top individual academic awards given out by the league office.

WKU ended the 2017 campaign with a 7-9-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in C-USA play. The Lady Toppers tied for eighth place in C-USA.
