Western Kentucky basketball coach Ray Harper updated the status of his three 2014-15 graduates Tuesday during an appearance in Glasgow.
Harper reiterated that forward George Fant is going to play football next season for the Hilltoppers.
“You will still have the opportunity to see him on the Hill as he’s going to play football next year,” Harper said. “We are desperately going to miss big George.”
Fant has been working out with the football program’s strength and conditioning coaches over the last month while mulling a decision on his future.
He would have one year of eligibility left to play football at WKU. Student-athletes get five years of eligibility, including four per sport. He’s exhausted his four years in basketball.
At last check, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound big man out of Warren Central High School was not participating in full workouts yet with the football program but was working with strength coach Justin Lovett, who trained tight end Julius Thomas during the former’s one season as a strength coach with the NFL’s Denver Broncos.
Thomas also played four seasons of college basketball at Portland State before playing just one season of football. Other NFL tight ends with basketball backgrounds include the Seattle Seahawks’ Jimmy Graham and the San Diego Chargers’ Antonio Gates.
Fant previously told the Daily News that NFL teams have shown interest in him as a tight end. He hasn’t played organized football since the eighth grade, when he played tight end and defensive end.
“I’m excited about that for him,” Harper said Tuesday. “Hopefully he makes an impact on the football program and can help them get back to another bowl game.”
As for guard T.J. Price, Harper said the sharpshooter has worked out for “about four NBA teams” and is currently in Las Vegas working out.
“One of my close friends who’s actually an assistant GM called me the other night,” Harper said. “I think they are possibly going to offer him a contract for summer league opportunities.”
Price had one confirmed workout for the Utah Jazz and had a strong showing in April in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is an annual four-day event in Portsmouth, Va., that invites 64 of the top college basketball seniors to play in front of representatives from NBA teams.
“When he left, his body was in unbelievable condition,” Harper said. “My NBA guys that I’ve talked to, they all say he’s doing well. I think he’s going to make a lot of money regardless, whether it’s NBA or overseas. It’s about producing once he gets there.”
Harper also said guard Trency Jackson has signed with an agent and is actively seeking a basketball career overseas.
