Greenwood hopes to ride the momentum of its Region 4 Soccer Tournament title at 7 p.m. tonight when it hits the road for a Sub-Section 2 match of the KHSAA State Tournament.
The Gators (12-8-3) travel to host Henderson County for the right to advance to the state Elite Eight.
“We’ve already played Henderson County once this season, but last season we destroyed them in the regular season and they came out and beat us when it counted,” GHS coach Scott Gural said Saturday after the Region 4 championship match.
“We know what’s in store for us, they know what’s in store for us, those are always battles, too. And we’ll be down there in their place, which always makes things interesting.”
Greenwood’s win over HCHS (17-5-1) came Aug. 22 at Drakes Creek Middle School. Two months later, the Colonels have won six straight and are Region 3 champions.
“I think we have a great chance,” Logan Guess said last week about the Gators’ chances of winning a state title. “We’ll just play whoever we got and see how far we can get.”
Guess provided the game-winner Thursday to beat Bowling Green 2-1 at Franklin-Simpson in the Region 4 championship.
In 2008, GHS fell 2-1 at home to Henderson County in the Sub-Section 2 game after beating the Colonels 8-1 at HCHS earlier in the season.
Henderson County is scoring four goals a game and is led by Caleb Mills and Brandon Potts, who have combined for 45 goals this season. Mills also has 15 assists, while goalkeeper Logan Spencer has recorded three clean sheets.
The winner of tonight’s match will travel to face either Marshall County (16-4-1) or Fort Campbell (12-4-1) on Wednesday.
