The District 12 volleyball tournament begins Monday at Warren Central High School, where four teams will vie for two berths to the Region 4 Tournament.

The action begins when No. 1 seed Greenwood takes on host Lady Dragons at 6 p.m. The Lady Gators (27-8) rolled through the regular season, going 6-0 in district play and finishing a combined 18-0 in games against league teams.

Greenwood is coming off a 2-1 showing at the Mid-Tennessee Classic and a loss to Ravenwood, Tenn. But the Gators are still the odds-on favorite to take the tournament championship with play focused on sophomore hitter Courtney Smith.

Monday’s 7 p.m. nightcap features Bowling Green vs. Warren East.

Bowling Green (16-11) earned the league’s No. 2 seed after beating East a total of four games to three during the course of the regular season. The Lady Purples started off 9-3 and 2-1 in league play before ending the season 7-8.

A season-ending injury to senior outside hitter Natilee Smith has unquestionably hurt BGHS, but the Lady Purples did end the regular season with two straight wins over Taylor County and Ohio County.

Warren East, the league’s third seed, might have the most momentum entering tournament play. The Lady Raiders (23-7) have won 13 of 14, with the only blemish a 2-1 loss at Allen County-Scottsville in which East lost both games by a combined four points.

Led by hitter Jessie Forrest, WEHS started league play 1-3 before beating Bowling Green and sweeping Warren Central. East has lost a total of five sets in the past 14 matches.

Bowling Green and Warren East split the regular-season series. The Purples won 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-20) on Aug. 27 while the Raiders won 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22) on Sept. 24.

The host Lady Dragons (12-18) are underdogs going in, but WCHS has proven it can be competitive. Central lost its season finale to Edmonson County 2-1, despite going point-for-point with District 13’s regular-season champs.

Central failed to win a game in District 12 play this season, but lost its first two league contests by a combined 6-5. If hitter Christina Casas can control the court, WCHS could spring the upset.

The two winners of Monday night’s matches return to Warren Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the championship match.
