It’s already been an eventful year in Columbia, S.C.
No. 25 South Carolina is off to a 4-1 start - the only blemish a four-point defeat at Georgia - and has won three straight games entering this weekend.
Today, the Gamecocks host Kentucky at Williams-Brice Stadium. Former Bowling Green star D.L. Moore is the only player on the South Carolina roster who hails from the Commonwealth.
“I have two (former) teammates that play for Kentucky - I wish ’em well,” Moore said, referring to former Purples Stuart Hines and Ryan Wallace. “We’re going up against a great team this week and we’re getting prepared for them. I’m gonna love it, because coming from Kentucky they’re one of my biggest rivals right now. We’re just trying to come out with a win.”
South Carolina is fresh off a 38-14 win over South Carolina State last weekend. But it’s a win Sept. 24 that still has everyone around the Palmetto State talking. That Thursday night, the Gamecocks upset No. 4 Mississippi 16-10.
“That was a great game - one of the highlights of the year,” Moore said. “They were a pretty good team and we just came in, settled down and won that game.”
Moore is in his second year in the USC program after wearing a redshirt in 2008. As a backup wide receiver this season, he’s caught just two balls for 10 yards.
“I’m in a good role right now,” Moore said. “We have a lot of good receivers and a lot of people trying to get reps. Being a freshman, I’m just trying to get all the reps I can and do them well.”
Moore also said he’s loving every minute of playing for head coach Steve Spurrier.
“He’s great,” Moore said. “He’s a great coach. He’s been coaching for years and he knows everything to do to win. That’s what I love about him.”
Kickoff today between the Gamecocks and Wildcats is at 11:30 a.m. CDT.
“We’re gonna come up mentally prepared for this game and try to win - that’s the main goal,” said Moore.
And what about any trash talking with some former friends and teammates?
“Not yet - but I know they’ll come up,” he said.
