Last Friday’s article “Travel Saga” is troubling regarding Mayor Elaine Walker’s private conduit for travel funds.

I have the following questions that such a “plan” inspires:

  • At what point are the whims of the mayor separated from the business of the city and the travel that goes along with that responsibility?

  • What could potentially motivate a private citizen to contribute to such a travel fund?

  • With such a conduit in place, could Mayor Walker solicit funds for other activities?

  • If such a private market exists to support the activities of the city, what other budget items can be supported by these local philanthropists?

Bypassing the city budget and soliciting private contributions seems to be inviting Chicago-style pay for play politics to Bowling Green.

Mayor Walker traveling to Washington, D.C., may be the most leveraged and valuable activity she could possibly do as mayor, but that is a decision to be made by the city commission, the mayor, and those involved in the budget making process.
