We want to convey our heartfelt gratitude to U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for taking such a keen interest in Kentucky’s economic welfare by diverting nearly $6 million into our state in a failed effort to defeat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in his race against Bruce Lunsford.

Mr. Schumer and his liberal cronies set their bull’s-eye on McConnell this year, hoping to spend enough money in negative television advertising in the state to give a victory to Lunsford. Their efforts backfired, and McConnell was re-elected by 6 percentage points.

In the last week of the election alone, Schumer and other outside interests pumped over $2 million into this effort.

On the positive side, Kentucky’s economy certainly needed the boost.

Gov. Steve Beshear recently said Kentucky’s budget faces a nearly $300 million shortfal, requiring spending cuts and possibly new revenue measures.

This announcement shows that the money Schumer and others poured into our state couldn’t have come at a better time.

With the multiplier effect, $6 million will pass through the hands of numerous individuals and businesses - some will ultimately end up in state coffers as tax receipts.

In Schumer’s Empire State, $6 million may be considered chump change. But in a less affluent state such as ours, it’s a pretty big deal. Meanwhile, the election should have proved to Schumer that McConnell knows Kentucky’s values far better than he does.

It would not be much of a stretch to view the $6 million spent to defeat McConnell as a measure of the fear and grudging respect liberals have for our senior senator’s considerable leadership skills.

Perhaps Mr. Schumer should’ve diverted the funds he sent here into Minnesota, where his far-left buddy and stand-up comic Al Franken is slightly behind Republican U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, pending the results of an ongoing recount.

At a time of another looming budget crisis in our state, Chuck, the money you and your buddies spent in Kentucky was greatly appreciated here in flyover country.

Six million thanks, senator.

" The suggestion that Bruce Lunsford is a liberal is laughable, but no more so than the suggestion that McConnell has demonstrated "considerable leadership skills", particularly over the course of the last eight years as he has unfailingly aligned himself with virtually the entire range of faulty and destructive Bush administration policies.

Had Lunsford been successful, we would have enjoyed not only the windfall from the millions poured into the state to support his campaign, but also a desperately needed change in the very leadership that has led to the economic crisis facing Kentucky. "
