Western Kentucky sophomore forward Arnika Brown has been indicted by a Christian County grand jury on counterfeiting charges stemming from an August incident in her hometown of Hopkinsville.
Brown faces 11 counts of possession of a forged instrument and five counts of theft by deception under $300.
Brown - who was indicted Friday - is still with the team, and participated in practice Tuesday, according to WKU sports information.
WKU officials gave no indication on her future status with the Lady Toppers.
“We are aware of the latest development concerning Arnika Brown,” WKU associate athletic director for communication Todd Stewart said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation. We have no further comment at this time.”
Brown was arrested Aug. 9 after police said she used counterfeit money at five businesses in Hopkinsville.
According to the police report, Brown said she “had been with another subject at several locations in Hopkinsville using counterfeit money to make purchases.”
Brown also stated she had five $100 bills, but she threw them away.
She is one of five co-defendants involved in the case. Yolanda Trice, 37, who was with Brown when the alleged incidents took place, was arrested Aug. 13, while Timothy Aubrie, 52, Derrick Whitlock, 41, and Tomekia Farrow, 27, were arrested following the arrests of Brown and Trice.
Farrow, Whitlock and Aubrie were also indicted Friday, but Trice was not.
The Daily News attempted to contact Brown’s attorney, Rick Boling, this morning, but was unable to reach him by press time.
Boling told the Daily News in August that he hoped Brown would be exonerated.
“It’s our belief that once everything flushes itself out, we’ll show she did not know this money was counterfeit and was an unwilling participant ... but for her being with this other person, she would never be in this position of being involved,” Boling said.
Brown was 2006 Miss Kentucky Basketball and originally signed with the University of Kentucky, but left UK after a few weeks. She initially planned to transfer to St. Catharine College, but returned home to Hopkinsville and took a job in a factory until she decided to return to college.
She enrolled at WKU in January 2007 and sat out for two semesters as a transfer before making her Lady Topper debut on Dec. 16 against Louisville.
Brown appeared in 24 games and was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, averaging 10.3 points and 7.6 rebounds. She was a key contributor in the Lady Toppers’ run through the Sun Belt Conference Tournament - averaging 37.7 minutes, 12.7 points and 8.3 rebounds - and was named to the All-Tournament team.
