Crystal Kelly didn’t have to wait long to continue her WNBA career.
The former Western Kentucky forward was claimed off waivers Sunday by the Sacramento Monarchs and will join the team in Seattle for Tuesday’s game with the Storm, which will be televised on ESPN2 at 9:30 p.m. CDT.
Kelly was drafted by the Houston Comets and played in all three preseason games, averaging 3 points and 2.7 rebounds. She was waived by the Comets on May 15, one of the team’s final cuts.
Kelly joins a Monarchs team that went 19-15 last season and lost in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. Sacramento lost Yolanda Griffith to free agency and All-Star DeMya Walker, who fractured a bone in her right knee April 27.
The Monarchs have a mix of youth and veterans, with former Tennessee guard and ESPN analyst Kara Lawson the most familiar name on the roster. Kelly will be one of four rookies on the roster, which includes Notre Dame’s Charel Allen, who faced Kelly in the Preseason WNIT last November.
To make room for Kelly, the Monarchs waived rookie center Izabela Piekarska, who played for the UTEP team that beat WKU in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in March.
