The Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra will take patrons to the movies with its upcoming concert, “A Night with Oscar … The Sequel.”

“This is a sequel to last year’s concert. We’re doing a variety of music from the movies,” orchestra music director and conductor Jeff Reed said. “We have a really good variety of music - nearly half a century of film music. We’re showing famous film clips from the movies.”

Sponsored by Col. Robert and Cora Jane Spiller and co-sponsored by U.S. Bank, the concert is at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Living Hope Baptist Church. Tickets are $26 for floor seats, $22 for balcony seats and $19 for loge seats. A Coffee Chat with the Maestro will be at 6:45 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Patrons can purchase or renew their subscriptions for the 2008-2009 VIP (Variety in Programming) Series, called “Playing the Soundtrack of Your Life,” during the concert. Those who renew their subscriptions by Monday will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

The program will feature music from 13 different film genres, including an epic, western, comedy, romance, musical theater, adventure film and science fiction. The music will be from a variety of films, including “Ben Hur,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “My Fair Lady,” “Patton,” “Back to the Future” and “Jaws.”

“Any genre of music you can think of, we’ve got music from it,” said Heather Higgins, marketing director for the orchestra. “We’re using this concert to show people that they know classical music.”

Films provide orchestras with the newest music, Reed said.

“It’s the final frontier for orchestras,” he said. “People are still composing music for films and they almost always use orchestra.”

Concerts such as “A Night with Oscar … The Sequel” show the connection between music and memories, Reed said.

“I try to program concerts that are nostalgic. This concert has a way of bringing back memories for people,” he said. “The music makes us think of the film, which makes us think of a specific time in life.”
