A car hit a gas pump Monday at the Speedway on Scottsville Road, causing an explosion and fire.
The driver of the vehicle, Robbin Marie Tedder, 21, Lot 110 at 1801 Morgantown Road, was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief and driving under the influence of alcohol (second offense within five years).
The accident caused about $50,000 in damage to the 3208 Scottsville Road location, said Officer Barry Pruitt, spokesman for the Bowling Green Police Department.
A witness reported seeing the car that Tedder was driving travel through the parking lot, nearly striking a vehicle, make a sharp turn and run over the gas pump at about 11:58 p.m., according to a city police arrest citation. Both the gas pump and the car caught fire.
It took Tedder several seconds to exit the vehicle, according to the report. She went into the store, where she had problems maintaining her balance and smelled of alcohol, according to the citation.
Tedder failed three field sobriety tests, the citation said.
Marlee Boenig, spokeswoman for the Bowling Green Fire Department, said Tedder received medical treatment. She was not seriously injured, Pruitt said.
It took two vehicles to put out the fire, Boenig said.
Pruitt said he couldn't remember an incident where someone had driven into a gas pump.
“This is a perfect example of how dangerous it is to drive while impaired,” Pruitt said.
A clerk who answered the phone at the store, who would not identify himself, said only that the store was still selling gas.
Tedder remains in Warren County Regional Jail without bond.
